"... Over the past several years, JAN has provided information
regarding fragrance sensitivity and accommodations in the
workplace. There has been a steady increase in cases related to
chemical sensitivity, environmental illness, allergy and respiratory
impairments. JAN Consultants have found that fragrance sensitivity
is the most prevalent issue related to these cases. A JAN case
database search for the term fragrance resulted in a clear increase in cases
since 1992; 37 cases between 1992-1995, and 567 between 1996-2000." [emphasis added]
Translation: It costs money to not control the use of scented products in the workplace.
And for the chemically injured, the costs are beyond calculation! -- barb

- Workplace Health
While the title is intriguing, this section deals only with pregnancy and age discrimination.
I guess those who are still gainfully employed, not pregnant and not "too old" don't have a right
to breath air unpolluted by modern synthetic scents, pesticides and various other high-
emitting VOC (volatile organic compound) products, for which there are ample alternatives.
And even pregnant women could be forced to breathe air so polluted, basaed on the fact that an
employer could point to that phrase, "recognized hazards." Yet another example of that axiom,
Never Measure, Never Manage! -- barb
"...Occupational Safety And Health Act
"The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to
provide a workplace free from recognized hazards that cause, or are likely to cause,
death or serious physical harm to pregnant women or their babies. It also gives
employees information about dangerous chemicals and substances. State and
municipal laws also allow employees and unions the right to ask for the names of
chemicals and other substances used in the workplace. ..."

Alison Johnson's testimony regarding
the World Trade Center disaster.
"Dr. Steven Levin of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine noted the development of
chemical sensitivity among some of the WTC disaster patients they have been seeing at
their clinic: 'Some of our patients once away from Lower Manhattan have noticed a
general improvement in their symptoms but find that exposure to cigarette smoke,
vehicle exhaust, cleaning solutions, perfume, or other airborne irritants provokes
reoccurrence of their symptoms in ways they never experienced before 9/11.' "

Alison Johnson has written books and produced videos on Multiple chemical Sensitivity (MCS)
and on Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), and through her organization,The Chemical Sensitivity
Foundation, she has also turned her efforts to those who suffer lingering illnesses from the horrific
events of 9-11. Alison has done much to open the eyes of our Congressional leaders and
public to our illnesses. Support her work by purchasing her books and tapes and donating to her

C-Span 2 Book TV rebroadcast a program on Alison Johnson's book Gulf War
Syndrome: Legacy of a Perfect War. The program aired at 11.35 P.M. EST (10:35 CST,
9:35 MST, 8:35 PST). The program includes Johnson reading passages from her
book as well as seven Gulf War veterans or their relatives reading their stories as they
appear in Part II of her book. The program also includes brief clips from Johnson's video
Gulf War Syndrome: Aftermath of a Toxic Battlefield. This program will probably be
rebroadcast on a few succeeding weekends. Visit the website http://www.booktv.org
on any Thursday to see listings for the following weekend. For information about
ordering the book or video, see http://www.conceptmed.com/Johnson.
Note to the chemically sensitive: Because this program includes many references to
chemical sensitivity or problems with pesticides, I think it is worth asking your family
and friends to watch it because they may be more sympathetic to your problems when
they hear Gulf War veterans describing their sensitivity to things like perfume.
Diane Dulka, whose husband Joseph died of pancreatic cancer three years after the war,
will read a passage describing how he spent 12 hours a day spraying lindane on
Iraqi prisoners in a closed tent to delouse them. Another section she will read states:
"Another thing that seemed unusual was that he had developed a strong sensitivity to
odors. He just couldn't stand to smell things like perfume or pesticide or gasoline."
Bobby Lawson's segment will include this passage: "I'm sensitive to a lot of chemicals
now too. There's many times when I walk into a department store or a place like that,
and I smell an odor and my body would just react. I have to leave right away
because I start shaking and sweating." Pat Browning states during the program: "Since
I've returned from the Gulf War I can't be around paint fumes; they make me really
sick. Bleach also bothers me now, and I can no longer wear perfume."
Two veterans with ALS (LouGehrig's disease) also describe pesticide exposures that they believe put them over the edge from Gulf War syndrome into ALS.

- Gulf War Syndrome - Legacy of a Perfect War
This book provides information and discussion on the major toxic exposures of the quickly
"won" Gulf War I. It takes the personal histories from 24 veterans and brings you into their lives
they now must live. They continue to battle for their very lives, PLUS battle for recognition
by our government . . . the very government they served.
Time has passed and we have GW II with more service people ill and injured (which is not to take
away from the memory of all of the people on both sides whose lives have been savagely taken).
But, again, we have people who have served who are not being served. Same is true for our
heros of 9-11. To anyone looking for help, I suggest that you read Alixon's books, view her videos,
try to get them in your local libraries, see if you can influence your PBS station to air the
videos, write your senators and representative. -- barb

"Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is closely related to Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Gulf War Syndrome (Gulf War Illness), and Sick Building
Syndrome. Researchers D. Buchwald and D. Garrity did a study comparing 30
patients diagnosed with MCS, 30 with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and 30 with
Fibromyalgia. They concluded: 'Despite their different diagnostic labels, existing
data, though limited, suggest that these illnesses may be similar, if not identical,
conditions...in fact, the diagnosis assigned to patients with one of these illnesses may
depend more on their chief complaint and the type of physician making the
diagnosis than on the actual illness process.'"

- AllerCare Products Recall
Remember the adage: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Only YOU can do
something about poisoning your body, your air and the water downstream: STOP buying
products containing petrochemically derived fragrances until the flavors and fragrance industry
and the FDA can show us that these products are safe for the user . . . and everyone who
comes in contact with the user. I might add, if you clean well, keep the area dry, add lots of fresh air
and sunshine to the mix, you don't have to rely on pesticides to control dustmites.
